Phase III Medical Student Sub-Internships and Electives

Phase III Sub-Internships

Many students who are interested in pursuing a residency in the field of Ob-Gyn may elect to complete a Sub-internship.  Sub-interns are expected to act as an intern accountable to a clinical team delivering patient care.  Sub-interns take overnight call. Sub-interns may contribute to teaching third-year medical students.

Sub-internships are available in  MFM, Gynecologic Oncology, or Benign Gynecology.

UNM and visiting medical students who are interested in completing a sub-internship may register for a four-week rotation through the Office of Medical Student Affairs.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR EXTERNS

USMLE exam scores

Passed on 1st attempt with minimum score of 220 (Subject to change)

Students attending Schools of Osteopathic Medicine:

  • Must have USMLEs as well as COMLEX
  • Same USMLE requirements as above
  • COMLEX passed on 1st attempt with minimum scores of 600 (Subject to change)

It is our institutional policy that IMGs already possess a J-1 visa, green card, or permanent residency at the time they apply to our Program--we cannot sponsor any type of visa.

Being accepted for a rotation does not guarantee an invitation to interview for an intern position.  You must still apply and be selected for an interview.

Phase III Electives

UNM fourth year medical students may elect to gain additional experience in Ob-Gyn.   Fourth-year students are expected to be accountable to a clinical team delivering patient care and may contribute to teaching third-year medical students.

A fourth year elective is available in Ambulatory Gynecology  in January through May.  Students registering for a sub-internship under Benign Gynecology are given priority for placement in this rotation

To register, contact the Office of Medical Student Affairs.
